What is Lent?

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.

Ways to Participate in Lent at Asbury

Each Wednesdays during Lent we will come together for a meal at 5:45 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall followed by worship from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. Each week a different Asbury group hosts the meal. The meal is free of charge and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

Our Lenten Wednesday theme will be "Inside the Miracles of Jesus". We will take an in-depth look at Christ's many miracles while at the same time discovering the power of desperation. Expect to gain some new insight and understanding of the what, why, who and deep meanings and lessons for us in Christ's miracles. You will find this series most enlightening. Lenten Wednesday worship is led by Pastor Paul Yoder.

The Gospel of Mark is a carefully crafted story that gives an account of Jesus' life and addresses the question of whether or not He is the Jewish Messiah. It is an action-packed and fast paced account of Jesus’ life and ministry. During this Lenten sermon series on Sundays, Pastor Harold will explore how we see Jesus respond to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people He encountered. Good News! He is doing the same today!
